Berkshire Grown presents a screening of Forgotten Farms, the acclaimed documentary about New England dairy farms, from Berkshire-based filmmakers Dave Simonds and Sarah Gardner.
Forgotten Farms gives us a glimpse into the past and a vision for a future regional food system. A generation ago, the New England landscape was defined by dairy farms. Today, family farms owned for generations are closing their doors. Yet these dairy farmers remain the foundation of the regional agricultural economy, collectively tending 1.2 million acres of farmland and producing almost all of the milk consumed in New England. But as consumers become more aware of their food’s source, dairy farmers have been left out of local food’s surge in popularity.
Through conversations with farmers and policy experts, the film reconsiders the role of these vital but forgotten farmers, highlighting the need to examine differences, develop mutual understanding, and find common ground. A truly sustainable local food system that benefits everyone will rely on all of our farmers.
Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 413.528.0041 or at the door the evening of the event. Filmmakers Sarah Gardner and David Simonds will present a panel discussion after the film for interested movie-goers.
