Transitioning to No-Till at Colfax Farm

October 9, 4:00-6:00pm
181 West Road, Alford, MA

Molly Comstock has owned and operated Colfax Farm since 2009 in various locations. After numerous seasons dealing with the familiar challenges of secure land tenure, Colfax Farm moved to Alford in 2019 with an arrangement that has allowed for investment in land and infrastructure. Molly will share the successes and challenges she has encountered while transitioning to no-till production methods. A small-scale vegetable operation, Colfax utilizes direct market channels (CSA, farmers markets, on-farm sales, and local restaurants) to foster a connection to land, food, farmer, and community.

Scaling up Pastured Poultry at Square Roots Farm

October 16, 4:00-6:00pm
95 Old Cheshire Road, Lanesborough, MA

Michael Gallagher and Ashley Amsden have operated Square Roots Farm since 2010. They produce meat birds, eggs, pork, beef, and vegetables and distribute through pre-order on-farm sales, 3 local farmers markets, and various wholesale accounts. In 2018, Square Roots increased production of eggs and meat birds as they phased out their CSA and sought to fill an unmet demand in the market. Michael and Ashley will share some of what they learned about improving the efficiency of their systems to increase production while keeping labor steady.
